MAGDA STRUGGLED TO contain her worry and fear. How could she save Lucinda from the prince now? The whole trip had spiralled out of control, and Lucinda didnât seem to have any idea about how much. Worse, she seemed to encourage him. There she sat, in one of those niches, looking as though she belonged there. All calm and certain, as though she expected to be here. Magda wanted to yell, to call her back, make her see the danger they were in. Instead, Lucinda sat there with the sweetest smile on her lips, and Magda could do nothing but watch.
She looked at Ascara, who stared at Lucinda with such concentration it looked as though she wished to inscribe every feature to her memory. She reached out and Ascara gripped her hand again. âWe are one,â Magda whispered.
âFor always,â Ascara mouthed.
Prince Ruth stamped his foot and interrupted her thoughts. âBecome one,â the prince ordered. âComplete my Hours, I demand it.â Like a petulant child, he stamped his foot again.
Magda stepped forward, she couldnât stop herself. Her self-control vanished. She wanted to kill the prince and save Lucinda. As she moved, Ascara pulled on her hand and stopped her. Then the women, the Hours, started to speak.
Those milky white eyes put her off. Spooky did not even come close to describing them. Even Lucindaâs eyes had become white, and Magda didnât know what to do about that either.
âOne begat two, begat more,â they said as one voice. âWe were eleven.â
âAnd now we are joined,â said Lucinda.
The prince clapped his hands. His grin so broad at that moment, he looked like the happiest man alive. âYes!â
âBut we are not the twelve, nor can we be the Hours,â Lucinda finished.
The prince froze. âYou cannot denyââ
One by one, the eyes of the women changed. White became grey, then like iron, and then black. Twelve pairs of black eyes stared at the prince, at Magda, and at Ascara.
Black eyes. Raven eyes.
âLook at us,â Lucinda ordered. âThese are not your women. They are not Hours for your pleasure and enjoyment.â Her voice grew stronger, louder. âThey are mine now. Lost to you. Lost for all time.â
âNo,â Prince Ruth cried. âI need them. I need you all to find my sister.â
âSheâs dead,â Lucinda the Raven answered. âAnd you must not seek the spirits of the dead. This I refuse.â
âNo! You canât do that,â he cried.
âI can, and I do refuse. I also refuse to allow you to control any part of time.â
âYou cannot refuse me. I am your prince and you⦠you are just women who I own.â
âOwn? You think you own anyone?â said Lucinda.
Anger, hard as steel, struck everyone in the room. Magda stepped back. Lucindaâs voice, controlled and distant, echoed as though from a world away. The menace in her voice could not be ignored. Lucinda, the Raven, rose like the black clouds of a gathering storm.
âI am your master,â the prince persisted.
âFool,â she roared.
âThe power is mine, and mine only,â he persisted.
âYou seek power?â
âYes. It is my destiny.
